Help the Kids on the Street Produce Season 2 →
You guys remember that I’m part of a movie riffing troupe called The Kids on the Street? We released an entire riff for free recently. If you’ve got around 30 minutes, give it a watch at the end of this post. We’re raising $500 to improve our recording equipment. 29 days to raise $500 at Kickstarter - and here’s the kicker. Everybody who contributes gets their name read....

Doctor Who: The Motion Picture
Hey! Doctor Who is getting a movie! Of course, the talk around it is that the movie will be self-contained, separating itself from the current television series, possibly even with a completely different Doctor from any of the actors who have recently played him. It’ll be a completely different continuity anyway, so I’m going to go waaay out on a limb here with my fantasy of what it...

Shame Your Friends
People are acting like using shame to attack overweight people is a new idea. It’s not. When I started college, I had a 42-inch waist. A year later, I had a 36-inch waist. I started a diet toward the end of my first semester. It made me lose weight, caused me to have more energy, and made me feel healthier than I had ever felt before. It also ended the constant migraines that had...

Out of Print?
That would be 1990’s Captain America, starring Matt “My father is J.D.” Salinger as Captain America and directed by Albert Pyun - who also directed Cyborg, Kickboxer 4, and Alien From L.A. The shoestring superhero flick wrapped production in 1990 and two years later was dumped on the direct-to-video market. It’s just been released on DVD. Sort of. Actually, if you...

Trillions for Defense, Not One Cent for...
You might remember that a study showed Americans vastly overestimate the amount of money public broadcasting gets — and yet they still feel it should receive more.  In case you need reminding, they think it’s 5% of the annual budget. It’s actually 0.1% Here’s a source for those numbers. My brother (on Twitter - @thudfactor) found this article about a trillion-dollar...

Send "Oh, Brother!" to Sketchfest (Kickstarter) →
First things first. This is not my project. I’m not writing for them. I don’t perform for them. I’m just a guy who kicked $10 to their campaign. Because they’re 25 hours from their deadline. And $100 (now $90) from their goal. That’s got to be a nervous time. Stop by and see if you can help them out.

Missing the obvious solution
In an interview with the L.A. Times, Dan DiDio speaks frankly about DC’s planned relaunch. He points out that DC has been steadily losing readers over the past few years. He places the blame on two factors. One: Comics have been slow to embrace digital. Two: The narrative of the superhero comics has become too complex for casual readers to get into. He’s right on both counts, but...

Dead or Alive? Why would anyone want Dead or Alive in 3-D— Oh. Right. My bad.

Lesson Learned Today
I had my car inspected yesterday, and after replacing my license plate bulbs the car passed. This morning, my right low beam was burnt out. That’s right, my right low beam lasted just long enough for the car to pass inspection. So I went to buy a bulb after looking in the manual and assuring myself this was a repair I could make. After hitting up K-Mart, Target, and [gasp!] Wal-Mart, I...

Best. Movie. EVAR.
A while back, I bought a Blu-Ray player that was 3-D capable. (Relax, I don’t have a 3-D TV… yet) As a promotion, Panasonic offered to send me a copy of Avatar on Blu-Ray 3-D. I sent in my card with my proof of purchase. Today, UPS delivered the disc. And this note. Now, I’m all for marketing hyperbole. And I actually quite like Avatar. But, “…the GREATEST...

I Can Quote That Film From Memory
Hey, it’s my favorite flicks! You know what that means! That’s right! The movies I know word-for-word. Movies like The Princess Bride, Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail, Carry On Screaming, and… uh…. … There are words in that movie? Oo! And it’s in 3-D, too!

A Boon For TV Detective Shows
By now, you’ve probably heard something about Lytro - it’s been making the rounds. In case you haven’t heard, Lytro is a startup that’s producing a digital camera that records light fields. This means you can actually refocus an image after the fact. All you have to do is click on the section of the picture you want in focus. It’s a potential gamechanger. Not...

I don’t intend to turn this blog into my Fake Criterions gallery. But if Mike Jittlov could get with the guys at Criterion and make this happen, I’d be one happy wizard.

I do not think you have thought this through.
Really, Netflix? You think because my 3 year-old nephew likes the children’s cartoon The Super Mario Bros. Super Show, he’ll also love the R-rated monster-sex-comedy The Toxic Avenger? Oookay! If you say so!
